Barbara Lois Hodge

Barbara Lois (Emmert) Hodge, age 84, of Tompkinsville, Kentucky passed away on Saturday, May 20, 2023 at Monroe County Medical Center.  She was born in Monroe County on August 15, 1938, a daughter of the late Herbert and Hassie (England) Emmert. She graduated from Rush Point School.

Lois is known as the “Dovie’s Lady.”  She ran the famous Dovie’s Restaurant in Tompkinsville for thirty-eight years.  She started at Dovie’s in 1971 as a waitress and ended up managing it until her retirement.  She was a dedicated and extremely committed worker; she would go into the restaurant on Sundays and clean while putting in extra work time without turning it in for money.  She called it her home away from home, and it showed through her many years of service to the establishment, rarely ever taking a sick day or vacation.  One of her most memorable professional accomplishments was getting her first raise from .80 cents to $1.00 per hour.

When she was not hard at work at Dovie’s, Lois was busy being a great mother.  She had a hard time raising her two girls on her own, but she came through those hard times with flying colors, and had an amazing relationship with her daughters. In her spare time, Lois enjoyed listening to Elvis Presley and Conway Twitty, watching the Waltons, Golden Girls, and Little House on The Prairie on Television, and being outside in the yard.

Lois is survived by her two daughters, Rebecca Webb, and Sharon Warriner, both of Tompkinsville, one grandson, Westley Webb, and three great-grandsons; Wade, Blake, and Jaxson Webb, one great-grand granddaughter, Tatum Webb.  A sister, Nelda Doris McPherson, several nieces and nephews also survives.

In addition to her parents, Herbert and Hassie England Emmert, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Christopher Howard, and two sisters; Reva Cain and Lera Teasley.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 24, 2023 at Bartley & Sons Funeral Home in Tompkinsville, with burial to follow in Mt. Poland Cemetery. Tim McHenry will officiate the services.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday morning after 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 2:00 p.m.
