Edith Mae Bartley Hurt, age 97, passed away at 6:53 AM, Thursday, October 16, 2025 with her daughter at her side, in Ben Hur Health and Rehabilitation, Crawfordsville. She was born in Coe in Monroe County, Kentucky on April 15, 1928 to the late Oral and Lula Petett Bartley. She married Otha Paul Hurt when he returned home from WWII on April 11, 1946 and he preceded her in death.

Edith attended schools in Burkesville and Marrowbone Kentucky. She was the owner/operator of the Elmdale Grocery from 1957 until she sold the store in 1965. She then was employed at R.R. Donnelley & Sons until 1972. She became the manager of her daughter Carol’s business, where she was affectionately known as ‘Mom’ and readily dispensed her straight-shooter style feedback to customers.

Edith was a member of the Lord’s Church and attended the Southside Church of Christ congregation. She was a person of strong faith, being baptized twice…once as a child and again at age 90, in Lake Waveland. Edie was a long-time member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Moose Lodge, American Legion and the Eagles.

She had an unwavering love for her children and family. She also formed a special bond with several people she considered as friends, who went above and beyond to provide care for her and she remained close to. She was an avid Bingo player and loved country music, especially George Jones. She also loved Harley Davidson motorcycles and always enjoyed watching the ‘poker run’ groups roll out.

She is survived by: daughter Karen Sue Brainard of Crawfordsville, son Roy (Carla) Hurt of Crawfordsville, daughter Kim (Jim) Vance of Waynetown and Randall (Amy) Hurt of Edmonton, KY. Nine grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
