John Durell Jordan, III, 84, Tompkinsville, Ky died on Monday evening, July 8, 2024. He was born on January 1, 1940, to the late John D. Jordan and Sallie (Murphy) Jordan.
On June 19, 1966, he married Carolyn (Bushong) Jordan of Tompkinsville, who survives him. He was a 1958 graduate of Whiteville High School, in Whiteville, NC, and a 1963 graduate of North Carolina State University, where he was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity. Following graduation, he entered the United States Army and was commissioned as a First Lieutenant, then served in Korea. After leaving the military, he worked with the maintenance department of McClain Trucking, and then moved to western Kentucky as a Cooperative Extension Service Agriculture Engineer. The family relocated to Tompkinsville in 1970, and he continued to serve as the Agriculture Extension Agent. Later, he and Carolyn opened the Saw Shop, and then the Farmers’ Service branch of Southern States Cooperative, Kentucky-Tennessee Tractor Parts and Greenworld Florist. After over 25 years in business, he was called to the ministry and served as Interim Pastor to several area churches, then the Director of Missions for the Monroe Baptist Association.
In addition to his work, he was a deacon at the Tompkinsville First Baptist Church, an active member of the Mid-Kentucky Antique Car Club, was a member of the Tompkinsville Masonic Lodge and enjoyed several years of singing with the Cavemen Chorus.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Carolyn (Bushong) Jordan of Tompkinsville, three daughters, Ronda Ellen Jordan-Elam (Mark) of Tompkinsville, Leigh Ann Jordan Davis (Brian) of Lexington, and Johnna Carol Jordan McHugh (Brian) of Simpsonville; one brother Robert (Connie) Jordan of Lumberton, NC, seven grandchildren, Allison Thompson Turner (Matt) of Bowling Green, Jordan Elam of Columbia, Bailey Watson (Tensley) and Catie Elam of Tompkinsville, Grace and Hope Davis of Lexington, and Caroline McHugh of Simpsonville, and a great-grandson M. Turner is expected in October. Other survivors include extended family, William Lynn (Tara) of Covington, Ga, Virginia King (Keith), Jackie Dale Thompson (Emily), and Eddie Rose Bartley of Tompkinsville.
Private graveside services and burial were held at sunset on Wednesday, July 10, 2024. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, July 27, 2024 at 2:00 pm at the Tompkinsville First Baptist Church. Visitation with the family will be from 12:00 p.m. until the time of memorial service at 2:00 p.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Monroe Baptist Association Hispanic Ministry, PO Box 134, Gamaliel, Kentucky 42140.
