Sue Nell Broughton Pedigo Harwood

Age 92, of Holland, Kentucky, passed away peacefully at Cal Turner Rehab and Specialty Care on July 7, 2026.

Born October 31, 1933, during the Great Depression, Sue Nell was the daughter of the late Woodard C. Broughton and Bessie Clemons Downing Broughton. A proud graduate of Allen County High School, she married James Ivan Pedigo on December 28, 1952. They moved to Akersville and together they farmed and raised four children: Mary Bess, James Finley, Nancy Annell, and Rebekah.

After the tragic loss of her husband James Ivan and their only son, James Finley, in a farming accident, Sue Nell moved to Scottsville. Determined to build a new future, she earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Western Kentucky University and began a career with Comp Care.

Four years later, Sue Nell felt the Lord’s guidance once more. Clyde Harwood Jr., a fellow Allen Countian and U.S. Air Force veteran whose wife had passed away, called to ask her for a date. Six months later, on September 11, 1975, they were married. Their blended family included Clyde’s daughters, Laura and Karen Harwood, and together they prayed for a child of their own. Their prayers were answered with the birth of Clyde C. “Trey” Harwood III.

Ever energetic, Sue Nell later earned her real estate license, working first with Ken Byrd and later with Pitchford & Dyer Real Estate. She and Clyde enjoyed traveling widely, though she always said there was no place like Holland.

Sue Nell’s faith was the cornerstone of her life. Saved on October 6, 1943, she was a devoted member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church for over 80 years, attending every service unless illness or travel kept her away.

She was actively involved in her community and was a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of American Colonists, Allen County Historical Society, Allen County Homemakers, the Order of the Eastern Star, and the Core. She served as vice president of the East Allen Ladies Auxiliary and faithfully worked the Holland voting booth for forty years. She also shared stories of her beloved community by writing News from the Hollows of Holland for the Citizen Times under the pen name “Aunt Nellie Ann.” In her free time, she enjoyed water aerobics, reading her Bible, and staying connected with friends on Facebook.

Sue Nell’s legacy lives on through her children: Mary Bess Pedigo Scott and husband J.R.; Nancy Annell Becker and husband David; Rebekah Gardner and husband Jimmy Neal; Trey Harwood and wife, “Daughter in-Love” Brandy; Laura Harwood; and Karen Harwood.

Her beloved grandchildren are Dr. Jeremy Harwood (Joy), Mary Elizabeth Brown, Elea Soler Patterson (Josh), Jacob Soler (Kaitlyn), Yancy Gardner (Caroline), Ainsley Gardner, Hunter Harwood, Emma Harwood-Bryant (Tanner), and Olivia Harwood.

Her great-grandchildren include Mackenzie Brown, Finley Brown-Miller, Hunter, Josie, and Coral Harwood; Isabella and Abram Soler; Leona and Julian Patterson; Locklynn Harwood; and Adeline Gardner.

She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Martha Broughton Hatler; her niece, Sue Neal Roberts (Rick); and her nephews, Woody, Tommy, Joel, and Jeff Broughton.

In addition to her parents and two husbands, she was preceded in death by her sister, Annice Broughton Conner; her brothers, Woodard Dean and Burl Broughton; her nephew, Ben Conner; and her sister-in-law, Earline Broughton.

Sue Nell’s life was a testament to faith, perseverance, and love for family and community. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
